VUI Designer - Amazon

Our mission is to push the envelope in automatic speech recognition (ASR), natural language understanding (NLU), and voice user interfaces (VUI) in general in order to provide the best possible end user experience.
As a VUI Designer, you will define and drive the end-to-end voice design or multimodal conversational UIs for Alexa and other voice interfaces. You must be an innovator, since you will be expected to create solutions for exciting ideas for which no interaction paradigm currently exists. You must be a collaborator, and will be working side-by-side with designers, product managers and engineers to bring your designs to life. You must be a pragmatic visionary who can translate business needs into a customer-focused solution.
As a member of the Customer Service UX team, you’ll collaborate with UX Researchers and UX Designers to invent and iterate on product experiences that start and end with the customer.

We are looking for a designer who can
• Produce user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and conversational user interface specifications
• Draw on depth of experience, but initiate voice UX research and testing efforts when necessary
• Conduct analyses of real usage data to inform voice UX optimization efforts
• Speak on concepts of spoken interaction design with product managers, engineers, and testers
• Start simple while not losing sight of the long-term vision
• Thrive in a nimble, start-up like environment
• Communicate clearly and think quickly

Basic Qualifications
• 2+ years of professional experience as a VUI Designer or related
• Experience with voice or multimodal speech interfaces
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience
• A working understanding of speech and language technologies
• Experience working cross-team and synthesizing feedback and input from product management, engineering, and marketing
• Experience presenting to and advising senior management

Preferred Qualifications
• Degree in Linguistics, HCI, Natural Language Processing or related fields preferred
• Expertise in human-computer interaction
• Ability to prototype voice user experiences with readily available tools
• Professional portfolio of voice design work
• Experience with agile/scrum
• An informed set of core values regarding user experience, technology, and business communication and the ability to present them with eloquence and concision
• Relentless desire for innovation, balanced with business needs, and customer expectations
• Commitment to learning and expanding professional and technical knowledge
